Aquaculture
Aquaculture is the production
of aquatic organisms such as fish, shellfish, algae and it has been
having a considerable development especially in recent years.Water disinfection with ozone in aquaculture is a technique increasingly used thanks to its numerous advantages over traditional methods. Ozone is a powerful oxidant and can disinfect pathogens (viruses and bacteria) from the incoming water to the rearing tanks, which means that the waste water is treated so that they conform to the standards imposed by laws and rules on the reuse of water sources.
Disinfection is essential in aquaculture, especially considering that a higher density of fish within a tank increases the risk of infection by bacteria, and viruses from water.
Other benefits resulting from the use of ozone in aquaculture are:
- the low risk of accidental
pollution compared to other methods of water
treatment;
- increased growth rate, which
is the faster growth of fish;
- a decrease in amount of feed
given to achieve the same growth rate;
- rapid oxidation of organic
matter, such as fish excrement, and colloids;
- increased fish production
can be obtained with the same facilities;
- elimination of ammonia and
nitrites that can be toxic to fish;
- reducing the amount of water
needed for the tons of fish that is produced;
- reducing the costs of
farming.
