Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis
is an autoimmune organ-specific disease that affects the nervous
system, characterized by the appearance in the brain and spinal
cord of outbreaks rounded gray-pink. Within these plaques there is
white matter demyelination and cell proliferation. The causes of multiple sclerosis are still unknown, but mainly they are due to an abnormal activation of the immune system, which depends on genetic factors involved in susceptibility to the disease, and environmental factors.
The symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis are different type and different seriousness: this may give rise to very different clinical pictures (that’s why it is called "multiple"). The unpredictability is one of the main characteristics of this disease. At the beginning of Multiple Sclerosis there may be found motor disorders, abnormal sensations, tremors, visual impairment (such as typical fogging-view, because of neuritis of the optic nerve or double vision), impaired balance and coordination of movements, paralysis and disorders sensitivity, accompanied by an alteration of skin sensitivity.
