Gonarthrosis

Gonarthrosis or arthrosis of the knee is the most common chronic degenerative disease that affects the patellofemoral joint, the femoral-tibial joint or the peroneal-tibial joint and, over the years, can lead to joint damage increasing to severe limitations in walking. It affects mainly after the 60th birthday. The symptoms of gonarthrosis are pain and swelling that initially occur only after prolonged efforts, and later they become more frequent and they occur even in unconditional rest. The primary gonarthrosis has no specific determinants, although obesity, overuse, aging, inheritance or predisposing factors have an important role. The secondary gonarthrosis appears instead as a result of fractures of the knee joint, as the misalignment of the extensor mechanism and as a consequences of actions or metabolic diseases. When gonarthrosis is at advanced stages, the knee appears globular because of thickening of the synovial fluid, the thigh muscles are more subtle, the joint movement decreases and often causes  joint creacking and a more severe pain.
